Esperanto for hackers

I often see laypeople getting confused by the many possible meanings of the English word "hacker". The fact that the media use the word almost exclusively in the context of criminal activities doesn’t help, either.

In Esperanto, the matter is clearer, and we have many words:

Hacker

  • artifikulo: someone who uses cleverness, skill or ingenuity to impress or deceive
  • kodumulo: an expert or hobbyist who modifies and tinkers with code in unconventional and custom ways
  • kodrompisto, retpirato: someone who breaks into computer systems, typically to do malicious things
  • datumsekurigisto: a computer security professional
  • komputila virtuozo: someone brilliantly talented with computers

To hack

  • kodumi: to tinker with code in original ways
  • modifi: to modify
  • ripari: to fix
